Ingredients

For the cider

  • 4 cups 4 cups apple cider Use high-quality apple cider for the best flavor.
  • 2 cups 2 cups cranberry juice Adjust the tartness by using sweetened or unsweetened cranberry juice.
  • 1/2 cup 1/2 cup brown sugar Adjust to taste.
  • 1 whole 1 orange, sliced Adds fresh citrus flavor.
  • 4 sticks 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 5 whole 5 whole cloves
  • 5 whole 5 whole allspice berries
  • 1/4 teaspoon 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg Freshly grated gives a better flavor.
  • 1/4 teaspoon 1/4 teaspoon ginger Fresh ginger can also be used.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large pot, combine the apple cider and cranberry juice.
  • Stir in the brown sugar until it's completely dissolved.
  • Add the orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice berries, nutmeg, and ginger to the pot.

Cooking

  • Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
  • Once simmering, reduce the heat to low and let it stew for at least 20 minutes.
  • After simmering, strain the mixture to remove the spices and orange slices before serving.

Serving

  • Serve warm in mugs or heatproof glasses, garnished with a fresh slice of orange or a cinnamon stick.

Notes

Add sliced fresh apples or pears for a fruity twist. For an adult version, add a splash of rum or whiskey. Can be made in a slow cooker on low for 4-6 hours.
