Ingredients

For the Filling

  • 1.4 kg sliced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 150 g granulated sugar
  • 15 ml lemon juice
  • 5 g ground cinnamon
  • 1 g nutmeg
  • 15 g all-purpose flour
  • 30 g butter, cut into small pieces

For the Crust

  • 1 package refrigerated pie crusts (2 crusts)
  • 1 unit egg (for egg wash)
  • 15 ml milk (for egg wash)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 220°C (425°F).
  • In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, lemon juice, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour. Stir everything together until the apples are well-coated.
  • Roll out one pie crust and carefully fit it into a 23 cm (9-inch) pie pan.

Assembly

  • Pour the apple mixture into the pie crust and dot the filling with small pieces of butter.
  • Roll out the second pie crust and place it over the apple filling. Seal the edges well, and cut slits into the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk. Brush this mixture over the top crust.

Baking

  • Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Then, reduce the temperature to 175°C (350°F) and continue baking for an additional 30-35 minutes.
  • Once baked, let the pie cool before serving.

Notes

Serve warm with ice cream, garnish with powdered sugar or caramel, and pair with tea or coffee for an elegant dessert experience. Feel free to mix different varieties of apples for depth of flavor.
