Ingredients

For the crust

  • 1 cup unsalted butter Using unsalted butter gives you complete control over the saltiness of your bars.
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

For the filling

  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed Light or dark brown sugar can be used, dark provides a deeper flavor.
  • ½ cup corn syrup Can be substituted with maple syrup for a different flavor profile.
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chopped pecans Substitute with walnuts or almonds for a different nutty flavor.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.
  • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir frequently until it becomes golden brown and emits a nutty aroma. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, powdered sugar, and salt. Pour the browned butter into the dry ingredients and mix until a cohesive dough forms.
  • Press the dough firmly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Bake for 20 minutes, or until the crust is lightly golden.

Filling

  • While the crust bakes, whisk together the brown sugar, corn syrup, eggs, and vanilla extract in a separate bowl until well combined.
  • Fold in the chopped pecans.
  • Pour the pecan filling over the baked crust, spreading it evenly.

Baking

  • Return the dish to the oven and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes, or until the filling is set and glossy on top.
  • Once baked, allow the bars to cool completely in the baking dish before lifting them out and cutting into squares.

Notes

These bars can be served warm or at room temperature. They pair well with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, coffee, or tea. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days at room temperature or refrigerate for up to a week.
