Ingredients

For the Apple Filling

  • 6 pieces golden delicious apples, peeled and chopped Can substitute with other apple varieties.
  • 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon Used for the apple mixture.
  • 1 1/2 tsp lemon juice Helps to balance the sweetness.

For the Crumble Topping

  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour Can substitute with gluten-free flour for a gluten-free version.
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon Used for the topping.
  • Pinch kosher salt Enhances flavor.
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, diced into small cubes Keep butter cold for a crumbly topping.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Butter an 8×8-inch baking dish.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the peeled and chopped apples with sugar, 3/4 tsp of ground cinnamon, and lemon juice. Toss until all the apples are evenly coated.

Assembly

  • Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  • In a separate bowl, mix together the brown sugar, oats, flour, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, and a pinch of kosher salt. Add in the cold, diced butter and mix until crumbly.
  • Spread the crumbly topping evenly over the apple mixture.

Baking

  • Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40-50 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbly.
  • Once done, remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Serve warm with vanilla bean ice cream or whipped cream. Can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven for best texture.
