  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, divided
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice or water
  • 1 pinch salt

For the Crisp Topping

  • 1/3 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, diced Keep cold for better texture.
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch nutmeg or cardamom (optional) For added warmth.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly butter two small ramekins or a 6-inch baking dish.
  • Slice apples about 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick and toss with lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, granulated sugar, and a tiny pinch of salt. Spread evenly in the dish.

Making the Topping

  • In a bowl, mix oats, flour, brown sugar, remaining cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Work in cold butter until the mixture forms chunky crumbs.

Baking

  • Sprinkle the topping over the apples and bake for 28 to 34 minutes until the fruit is tender and the top is golden.
  • Cool for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.

Serving

  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

For best texture, refrigerate the topping before baking if the kitchen is warm. Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or reheated in the oven.
