  • 1/2 large juice of half a lemon Adds acidity.
  • 4 tablespoons soy sauce Adds umami flavor.
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 100 ml beef broth Enhances depth.

For the Side Dish

  • 1 kg potatoes Use a starchy variety for mashing.
  • Water Enough to boil potatoes.
  • 1 tablespoon salt For boiling potatoes.
  • 30 g butter For mashing.
  • 100 ml warm milk To achieve creaminess.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, whisk the chicken egg lightly. Add the minced beef and mix until combined.
  • Heat olive oil and butter in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the finely diced onion and sauté until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Add minced garlic to the pan, sauté another 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Season lightly with salt.
  • Transfer the cooked onion and garlic into the beef mixture bowl. Add grated mozzarella, salt, black pepper, and breadcrumbs. Mix everything well by hand until fully combined.
  • Shape the mixture into small, evenly sized meatballs (about 1½ inch/4 cm diameter).

Cooking

  • Heat olive oil in the frying pan over medium heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides for 5-7 minutes until golden but not fully cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  • In a saucepot, combine tomatoes, honey, lemon juice, soy sauce, nutmeg, cinnamon, dried ginger, chopped garlic, and beef broth. Stir well and bring to a simmer.
  • Add the browned meatballs to the sauce, cover, and simmer gently for 15 minutes until meatballs are cooked through and flavors meld.

Mashed Potatoes

  • Meanwhile, peel and cut potatoes into chunks. Boil in salted water until tender, approximately 15-20 minutes. Drain well.
  • Mash potatoes with butter and warm milk until creamy. Season with salt to taste.

Serving

  • Serve the meatballs nestled in the tomato sauce atop the creamy mashed potatoes.

Notes

Browning meatballs before simmering locks in juices and adds color. Ensure potatoes are fully drained before mashing to avoid a watery mash.
