Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 cups apples (Granny Smith or cooking apples, diced and peeled)
  • cups light brown sugar
  • 2 cups raisins
  • cups golden raisins (or sultanas in Ireland)
  • cups currants
  • ½ cup glacé cherries (washed and quartered)
  • ½ cup candied mixed peel
  • ½ cup dried apricots (diced)
  • ½ cup chopped almonds
  • Zest and juice of 2 oranges Zest and juice of 2 oranges
  • Zest and juice of 2 lemons Zest and juice of 2 lemons
  • 4 teaspoons mixed spice (or pumpkin pie spice)
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon (omit if using pumpkin pie spice)
  • 1 cup melted butter (equivalent to 2 sticks)
  • cup whiskey (or brandy)

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, toss together all of the ingredients except for the whiskey or brandy. Mix them thoroughly to combine.
  • Cover the bowl with a kitchen cloth and leave it in a cool place for at least 12 hours, or overnight.

Cooking

  • Once the resting period is over, transfer the mixture into a crock pot.
  • Set your crock pot to the low setting and cook for about 3 to 4 hours.
  • After cooking, let the mixture cool completely before stirring in the whiskey or brandy.

Storage

  • Pack the cooled mincemeat into sterilized preserving jars. Seal them well and store in a cool, dark place.
  • Homemade Mincemeat can last up to a year!

Notes

For added flavor, consider experimenting with different spices or fruits. A vegan option can be made by replacing the butter with a plant-based alternative.
