Ingredients

For the Cookies

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened room temperature
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 1/2 cups chopped fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts

For the Frosting

  • 1/3 cup butter for frosting, browned
  • 2 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons hot water for desired consistency

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, cream the softened butter, sugar, and brown sugar together until smooth.
  • Mix in the milk, egg, and orange juice until well combined.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda. Gradually add this mixture to the creamed mixture, blending well.
  • Gently fold the chopped cranberries and walnuts into the dough.
  • Using a tablespoon, drop rounded balls of dough 2 inches apart onto greased baking sheets.

Baking

  • Place the baking sheets in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool on wire racks.

Making the Frosting

  • In a saucepan over low heat, melt the butter until it turns golden brown, about 5 minutes. Let it cool for 2 minutes.
  • Transfer the browned butter to a small bowl. Add the confectioners' sugar and vanilla. Gradually mix in hot water, one tablespoon at a time, until you achieve your desired frosting consistency.
  • Spread the frosting over the cooled cookies and enjoy!

Notes

You can prepare the cookie dough in advance and chill it in the refrigerator. If you prefer a less sweet cookie, reduce the amount of confectioners' sugar in the frosting. Swap out walnuts for pecans or almonds for a different flavor profile. Store these cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
