Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 12 slices slices of bread (preferably stale or day-old) Using stale bread enhances the texture.
  • 4 large eggs
  • 500 ml milk
  • 100 g granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 100 g chopped nuts (e.g., walnuts or pecans) Nut Alternatives: Can be substituted with seeds or chocolate chips.
  • 100 g brown sugar
  • 60 g butter, melted

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F).
  • Grease a baking dish to prevent sticking.
  • Cut the bread into cubes and arrange them carefully in the baking dish.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Pour this mixture over the bread cubes, pressing down gently to ensure all the bread is soaked.
  • In another bowl, mix the chopped nuts, brown sugar, and melted butter to form a crumble topping. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the soaked bread.

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the mixture is set.

Serving

  • Serve warm, optionally dusted with powdered sugar or drizzled with maple syrup.
  • Fresh fruits like strawberries, blueberries, or banana slices make excellent accompaniments.

Notes

Make it ahead by preparing the bread and egg mixture the night before. Use stale bread for the best texture, or toast fresh bread lightly before cutting. Can be frozen for up to 2 months.
