Ingredients

For the cookie dough

  • 1 cup unsalted butter Browning unsalted butter is key; it allows you to control the salt level.
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed A mix of brown and granulated sugar creates perfect sweetness.
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour For best results, measure flour using the spoon and level method.
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt Reduce to 1/4 teaspoon if using salted butter.
  • 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a medium saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat, stirring frequently until it turns golden brown and emits a nutty fragrance. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the browned butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar. Mix until well blended and smooth.
  • Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing thoroughly after each addition. Then stir in the vanilla extract.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients into the butter and sugar mixture, stirring until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  • Fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips using a rubber spatula.

Baking

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Using a cookie scoop or tablespoon, drop dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing each ball about 2 inches apart.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden and the centers are set but still soft.
  • Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Let the cookie dough rest in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before baking for better flavor and shape retention. For variations, consider adding chopped nuts or using different types of chocolate chips.
