Ingredients

For the Trifle

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (or 1 homemade chocolate cake) Follow instructions if using a box mix.
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for whipping) Ensure it's cold for better whipping.
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups canned or fresh cherries (pitted, with juice or syrup)
  • 1/4 cup cherry juice Reserve from canned cherries or fresh.
  • 2 cups vanilla pudding (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate shavings (or grated chocolate)
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder Optional for garnish.

Instructions

Preparation

  • If using a box mix, follow the instructions on the package to bake the chocolate cake. For a homemade version, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and a pinch of salt. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract, then mix until smooth. Bake until a toothpick comes out clean, then let it cool completely before cutting into cubes.
  • In a medium bowl, whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form. Gradually add in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, continuing to beat until it becomes fluffy.
  • If using canned cherries, drain them and reserve the juice. Mix the cherries with the reserved cherry juice in a bowl. If using fresh cherries, simply pit and slice them to prepare.

Assembly

  • In a large glass bowl or individual cups, start layering. Begin with a layer of chocolate cake cubes, followed by a layer of cherries, then a layer of vanilla pudding, and finally a layer of whipped cream. Repeat the layers until you run out of ingredients, finishing with whipped cream on top.

Chilling

  • Cover the trifle and place it in the refrigerator for at least one hour before serving. This resting time allows the flavors to meld beautifully.

Serving

  • When ready to serve, use a large spoon or a ladle to dish out the delightful layers. You can garnish with chocolate shavings and a light dusting of cocoa powder for an elegant touch.

Notes

Make ahead for better flavor blending. Substitute different fruits or add layers of crushed cookies or nuts for extra texture.
