Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 250 grams all-purpose flour
  • 15 grams baking powder Key ingredient for leavening
  • 5 grams salt
  • 30 grams sugar (optional) Can be omitted for a less sweet bread

Wet Ingredients

  • 60 grams butter or oil For richness
  • 180 millilitres water or milk Use milk for a richer dough

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar, mixing everything well.
  • Cut in the butter or oil using a fork or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Gradually stir in the water or milk, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  • Briefly knead the dough on a floured surface, then shape it into a round or square loaf, about 1 inch thick.

Cooking

  • Cook your bannock over a campfire on a greased flat surface or in a pan over medium heat.
  • Flip it once, cooking until golden brown on both sides, which should take about 10-15 minutes.

Notes

Experiment with flavours by adding herbs, cheese, or spices. If cooking indoors, bake at 200°C (400°F) for 20-25 minutes. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2-3 days.
