Ingredients

For the dough

  • 1/3 cup Warm Water Between 110 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit (43 to 46 degrees Celsius)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons Active Dry Yeast One packet
  • 1/3 cup Granulated Sugar Plus 1/4 teaspoon for the yeast mixture
  • 1 1/3 cups Whole Milk Warmed to 110 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit (43 to 46 degrees Celsius)
  • 3/4 cup Salted Butter Softened, divided
  • 1 large Egg At room temperature
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Salt
  • 4 1/2 cups All-Purpose Flour Scoop and level to measure

Instructions

Preparation

  • In the bowl of an electric stand mixer, whisk together the warm water, yeast, and 1/4 teaspoon of sugar. Allow it to rest for 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes foamy.
  • Once foamy, fit the mixer with the whisk attachment and add in the remaining 1/3 cup of sugar, warm milk, 5 tablespoons of softened butter, the egg, and salt to the yeast mixture. Blend the ingredients together.
  • Next, add in 2 cups of flour and mix until everything is well combined.
  • Switch the mixer to the dough hook attachment. Gradually add the remaining 2 1/2 cups of flour, mixing until the dough is nearly smooth and elastic, roughly 4 to 5 minutes.
  • Transfer the dough to a greased bowl and cover it with greased plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, which will take about 1 1/2 hours.

Shaping and Baking

  • After the dough has risen, punch it down gently and divide it into two equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball.
  • Roll each ball into a large circle, about 13 to 14 inches in diameter. Spread each circle with 2 tablespoons of softened butter.
  • Cut each circle into quarters and then into wedges. Starting from the wide edge, roll each wedge up tightly.
  • Transfer the rolled wedges to a buttered cookie sheet, tucking the tip underneath to help them keep their shape.
  • Allow the rolls to rise again until they’ve doubled in size, about 1 hour. During the last 15 minutes of rising, preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius).
  • Bake the rolls for 15 to 19 minutes or until they are golden brown.
  • Once done, brush with the remaining 3 tablespoons of melted butter and serve warm, or store in an airtight container for later.

Notes

These rolls pair wonderfully with soups, stews, and roasted meats. For a twist, consider adding herbs or garlic powder to the dough.
