Ingredients

Meat Filling

  • 450 g ground pork
  • 450 g ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 0.5 tsp ground allspice
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Crust

  • 2 pieces pie crusts (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 egg beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 220°C (425°F).
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground pork and beef until browned.
  • Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, cooking until the onion is translucent.
  • Stir in the ground cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, salt, and pepper. Cook for an additional 5 minutes to blend the flavours.
  • Remove the skillet from heat and let the meat mixture cool slightly.
  • Roll out one pie crust and fit it into a pie dish.
  • Fill the crust with the meat mixture, spreading it evenly.
  • Roll out the second crust and place it over the filling. Seal the edges and cut slits in the top crust for steam to escape.
  • Brush the top of the pie with the beaten egg for a golden finish.

Baking

  • Bake for 30-35 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and inviting.
  • Let the tourtière cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

For a comforting meal, serve with a dollop of applesauce or a tangy chutney. You can prepare the meat filling a day in advance and freeze the pie for later use.
